You may qualify as a Public Safety Member if any of the following apply: 1) You are an active member of a federal, state, provincial, regional, or local government agency that: a) provides law enforcement, fire, emergency medical, or other public safety services; or b) provides training to law enforcement, fire, emergency medical, or other public safety personnel and uses video in the performance of those duties. 2) You are active duty or civilian personnel of a recognized military agency who uses video in the performance of your duties. 3) You are an active member of a federal, state, provincial, regional, or local government agency that is an oversight or regulatory agency establishing law enforcement, fire, emergency medical, or other public safety personnel training standards. 4) You are a member of a not-for-profit organization under contract or cooperative agreement with a qualifying government agency to provide training to law enforcement, fire, emergency medical, or other public safety personnel and that uses video in the performance of its duties.
The Associate Member category covers anyone who does not qualify under the Public Safety categories but whose experience, professional or educational credentials, organizational affiliations, or other unique circumstances makes membership appropriate. Retired Public Safety members fall under Associate Membership. Associate Members in good standing receive the same benefits as Public Safety Members but may be limited from participating in restricted organizational activities (e.g., voting or holding office). "In good standing" means dues are paid and membership status is current. Career-change applicants must document, to the Executive Secretary, that they are currently in a career position not associated with the processing of video or audio evidence or with the sales, marketing, or development of video or audio forensic applications. Student applicants must be full-time college students at an accredited institution majoring in a forensic-science-related field or law enforcement. "Full-time" means at least 12 semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) for undergraduate study, or at least 9 semester hours for graduate study. A letter or transcript from the institution stating the number of credits currently being taken is required — the words "full-time student" alone are not sufficient. Students may attend LEVA courses at the Education rate.
